In order to promote an effective environment for student learning, I plan to use tactics from the findings of Marvin Marshall, Craig Seganti, and Haim Ginott. Like Marvin Marshall, I believe that teachers should foster responsible behavior rather than obedience. When students understand the reason for all classroom procedures and are inspired to follow them, the classroom operates at its most effective potential.
As a teacher, I plan to help students analyze, reflect on, and adopt behavior that promotes learning. I believe that teaching procedures at the beginning of the school year or semester will lay the foundation for a classroom with an effective system of behavior. When a student misbehaves, they should understand what level of social development they are currently acting on. When using consequences to promote good behavior, I plan to elicit procedures rather than imposing rules.
A slight part of my mindset, however, correlates with Craig Seganti's philosophy when implementing procedures. All students in the United States have the right to a free, quality education. I believe that students should recognize that right when considering their own actions. As a result, I plan to be unwavering and consistent with my approach to discipline. However, I plan to use a language that conveys discipline in the most effective way. Like Haim Ginott, I intend to use congruent communication. When bad behavior emerges, I will address situations rather than students' character.
